Presence of hash tags on social media has grown tremendously
from a minuscule to a mammoth. They are used extensively to connect users
through shared interests allowing people to keep their eyes on latest trends.
From sensitising social issues to glamorous paparazzi, hash
tags hit bull’s eyes when it comes to show mass solidarity to a cause or
inclination towards glittery news. In recent years hash tags has given momentum
to various social causes like #pinkoctober for spreading awareness on breast
cancer month. #MeToo was kick started,
when thousands of women wrote it as their status to give people a sense of
magnitude of the problem. Another recent campaign is the #TimesUp, reflecting
the extent of sexual harassment in the Hollywood industry, another attempt to
bring the issue of polarised society to a bigger picture. #NoShaveNovember
witnessed men showing solidarity to cancer throughout the world.
#ThrowbackThursday vs #FlashbackFriday
Hot favourites of social networking enthusiasts, it includes
posting nostalgic content on social media.
#NosePin – aesthetic nose pins made men and women go wild.
Blue whale challenge exposed the destructive side of the
mass approach of hashtags.
Ice bucket challenge, invisible box challenge were no
oblivion rather made their presence on top charts.
Hence # gives an epiphany to the way we used to look at
social media.
