Eminent criminal lawyer Ram Boolchand Jethmalani, passed away on the 8th of September at the age of 95 after suffering from prolonged illness. The former Union law minister died early on Sunday morning after his health deteriorated over the last two weeks.
Ram Jethmalani breathed his last at 7.45 am at his official residence in New Delhi.
Over the span of his career, Jethmalani had a strong impact on the judiciary of the country and appeared in many high-profile cases, some of which are Nanavati case in 1959, Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case in 1991, Securities Scam case in 1992 and Jodhpur sexual assault case in 2013.
Although his political career is no match to his career as a lawyer, he played a major role in the emergency period during 1975 and 1977. Soon after he started his political career as a parlimentarian. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1988 and later went on to assume the role of Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs in 1996 as part of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.During the second tenure of the Vajpayee government in 1998, Jethmalani was given the portfolio of Union Minister of Urban Affairs and Employment. However, in 1999, he was again sworn in as the Union law minister.
After more than seven decades as a lawyer, he announced his retirement from the legal profession in September 2017.
Ram Jethmalani's demise is an irreparable loss to the entire country and he will never be forgotten by the nation.
