Onam is the biggest festival celebrated in Kerala. It marks the commemoration of home-coming of the mythical king Mahabali.
Mahabali was the king of the beautiful kingdom of Kerala. He was greatly respected by his subjects. It is even believed that the state witnessed a golden era during his reign. Mahabali was dearly loved by his people because he was a very generous king and granted everybody’s wishes. Looking at his growing fame and popularity ,Gods became jealous and insecure and seeked the help of Lord Vishnu.
One day Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a poor Brahmin and asked the king for a piece of land. The king said he could have as much land as he wanted. The Brahmin claimed he only wanted as much land that he could cover with his three steps. Just as the king agreed to grant his wish, the Brahmin began to expand and increased himself so much that he towered above the heavens. With his first step he covered the whole Earth, with second he claimed the whole skies. He then asked the king where to place his third step; the king bowed down and asked the Brahmin to place his last step on his head which pushed him to the pathala; the heaven like underworld. The king was so attached to his people that he requested Lord Vishnu to allow him to visit his people once a year. It is the day of the visit of king Mahabali to Kerala that i celebrated as Onam every year.
It is a ten day celebration, out of which 9th and 10th day are the most important. The ninth day is considered as the Onam Eve, it marks the day when king Mahabali descends into Kerala. The tenth and the final day is known as Thiruvonam (Thiru-onam: sacred Onam day).
Apart from the legend, Onam is all about Onapookalam (floral carpet) and the savouring Onam Sadhya (feast) which is an indispensible part of Thiruvonam and every Keralite makes sure they attend at least one Sadhya.
The Vallamkali(snake boat race)is another event that is synonymous with Onam.About 100 oarsmen row huge and graceful snake boats and men and women come from far near to watch the snake boats skim through water.
Most of all Onam is considered to be a harvest festival falling at the time of harvest every year.
