Muharram basically means forbidden or sinful. It enmarks the first month of the Islamic calendar and the second holiest month after Ramzan. It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which warfare is forbidden, as mentioned in the Quran. The tenth day of Muharram, called Ashura is a gazetted public holiday in India.
While some Muslims fast in the daylight hours on this day, for others it is regarded as a month of mourning, commemorating the Battle of Karbala where Imam Hussain was beheaded. It is considered to be a period of intense grief. Muharram observes sorrowful poetic recitations and prayer meetings in mosques.
