CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF DIWALI
Diwali, the festival that marks the victory of light over darkness, the triumph of good over evil , the everlasting win of hope over despair,is a festival of many meanings. The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘deepawali’ which means ‘rows of ight’.
The festival of Deepawali has various cultural connotations for different religious sects in India.According to the hindu legend, this festival marks the victorious return of Lord Rama and Devi Sita to Ayodhya after their 14 years of exile in which Lord Rama defeated the Lankan king Ravana who had abducted Sita and restored the victory of good over evil. The people of Ayodhya celeberated this return by lighting earthen lamps and expressed their joy through fireworks.
In some parts of India ,like Bengal diwali is associated with goddess Kali killing the demons , Shambhu and Nishambhu, who were threatening lord Indra followed by numerous battles which infuriated goddess kali and she destroyed them to minutes. Thus ,this legend marks the victory of light over darkness.
The Jains believe it is the night of Deepawali that their twenty fourth Tirthankara,Lord Mahavira attained his niravana and entered into the eternal state of moksha .
Although there are various cultural and religious reasons to celeberate Diwali, the reason why we Indians adore this festival is that it gives us an opportunity to be with our friends and family,a stage to showcase our near and dear ones what they mean to us. Diwali ,is that one day of the year that gives us memories that are cherished for a lifetime,a day that tugs our lips into a smile just by mentioning of its name,a day were all the stars come under one roof , a day that makes us reaise that no matter where we are or where we would be ;DIWALI will always bring happiness.
