OSCAR AWARDS
The
2017 Oscars were no wonder one of a kind. It saw so many new records being
made, had notable firsts and was full of surprises. Hosted by comedian Jimmy
Kimmel for the very first time, the 89th Academy Awards took place on February

The
makers of La La Land had to face immense disappointment after losing the Best
Picture Award to Moonlight after the movie was
mistakenly announced the winner. La La Land’s failure to win the Best
Picture made it the first film in history to earn 14 nominations but loseBest
Picture. Both of the previous two films with 14 nominations, All
About Eve
(1950) and Titanic (1997), ultimately took home the big
prize. However, La La Land made Damien Chazelle (32 years) the youngest person
ever to win the best director.
What
made this ceremony even more special was that it was the first time when Oscars
saw more than three black winners- Moonlight’s
Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, Fences’ Viola Davis for Best
Supporting Actress, O.J.: Made in America director-producer Ezra Edelman for
Best Documentary Feature, and Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin
McCraney for Best Adapted Screenplay. Cherry on the cake is the fact that
Mahershala Ali is the first muslim actor to ever win an Oscar.
After 21 nominations, sound editor Kevin O’Connell
finally won his first Oscar for his work on Hacksaw Ridge.
La
La Land won the maximum awards while Moonlight won three. The ceremony sure had
many delightful moments but it ended up on an unprecedented note with its
historic mix-up, the craziest moment in the Oscar history, and one that won’t
be forgotten soon.
