A day with the embodiment of wisdom at Jesus and Mary College
It was a magnificent day in the pages of the
history of Jesus and Mary College when His Holiness , the 14th Dalai Lama
graced us with his presence. His appearance on the stage brought a wave of
jubilation throughout the thousands of
students that thronged the auditorium to get a glimpse of His Holiness and to
hear his message for the youth.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso
is the spiritual leader of Tibet. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be
manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion
and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are believed to be enlightened
beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order
to serve humanity.
Lamp lit, blessings of the almighty invoked with
a performance by the Indian Music Society, it was time for our epitome of
wisdom to address the gathering. He started beautifully by stating a fact,
unconsciously accepted universally, but never given thought about by
millions “All 7 billion human beings on
this planet today are physically, mentally and emotionally the same. We all
wish to live a happy life and we all have the same right to do so.”
He further instilled in us a vision of oneness and how such a feeling of oneness, cutting
across different religions and ideologies can help us fulfill our wish to lead
happy lives. Citing a simple example, he said that when rushed to a hospital, a
doctor does not seek to know the religion or race of the person : he only seeks
to heal the ailing person infant of him. In a similar way, basic human nature is purely compassionate and is one
and the same, undivided by any religious or regional differences. This sense of
humanity can be advanced through education and
sense of collective responsibility for the world.
Speaking about inter-religious harmony, His
Holiness declared that he has many good friends who are Christian, Hindu ,
Sikh, Jewish, Parsee and Jain. He further went on to say that all these religions
work towards one common goal, the encouragement of love and compassion, through different philosophical approaches.
Prior to the Vote of thanks by Head of Commerce
Department , Dr. Rekha Dayal , we were addressed by His Holiness one more time
, quoting exactly:
“ You are your own master, what happens to you
depends on what you do. To learn to tackle our emotions is something that
involves the mind and the use of intelligence on the basis that our minds are
calm. That’s all.”
The 7th of February stands marked in the pages
of every JMCite’s life, for it was a unique day of insight and edification.
