URI: THE SURGICAL STRIKE MOVIE REVIEW
The heart throb, Vicky Kaushal returned to the cinemas with Uri:The Surgical Strike last friday with a much awaited role.
Though everyone was quite aware of the storyline and the series of events, it didn’t stop people from going to the cinemas and watching it and the box office numbers are speaking for themselves.
Hindi films are about emotion and not nuance. It’s just their grammar, and not necessarily a flaw or a shortcoming. But Uri: The Surgical Strike, is fashioned as a different kind of Bollywood war film, recalling the retaliatory strikes undertaken by the Indian Army on terrorist launch pads in Pakistan, and if pruned judiciously it might’ve worked as a crisp, gritty procedural.
The protagonist, Vicky Kaushal was a perfect fit for the role of Major Vihaan Shergil, with the physical bulkiness combined with the sheer conscientiousness that the role required. The laudable cinematography makes the movie all the more gripping, filling us with suspense and terror despite already knowing the outcome.
Another thing I really liked was that the movie avoided extreme jingoism, unlike most Bollywood movies. It isn’t another patriotic movie with men in uniforms thumping their chests claiming their love for the nation, though it does have dialogues like “Unhe kashmir chahiye aur hume unka sarr” but us Bollywood fans are a sucker for such lines, aren’t we!
All in all, it’s being viewed as a fitting tribute to the Indian Army but cannot be considered as perfect. There is too much focus upon the personal life of Vihaan Shergill in the first half of the movie which makes it a bit sluggish. The second half gets more interesting with the entire planning sequence and conducting the entire operation. The film does have certain flaws in direction, script, dialogue writing etc. Firstpost has given it a 3.5/5 rating and I cannot agree more.
In my view, Vicky Kaushal has given an excellent performance and this movie can be taken as an apt tribute for the Army of our country.
