PADMAVATI, an Indian Epic Period Drama film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is awaited by millions of people in India as well as abroad. But the film has been delayed indefinitely because of a lot of revolving controversies.
While the various Rajput Associations, especially the Karni Sena, has claimed that the movie distorts the historical facts and shows Rani Padmini( the major lead character in the film, played by Deepika Padukone) in bad light,
Bhansali has clearly stated time and again that the film is based on a fictitious poem 'PADMAVAT' written in 1540 by a sufi poet Jayasi.
So where does the point of distortion of history comes?
Various historians have also said that there has been no mention of Rani Padmavati in any of the written books of that period relating to the Rajputs or The Chittor invasion which took place in 1303, so it seems that the objections made by the Rajputi Associations are quite baseless. Moreover, the poem which serves as a base for the film was written in 1540, 237 years after the Chittor Invasion. So it clearly is a seed of poet's imagination, a fiction. And anyone has a right to interpret fiction as he likes.
The film has faced quite a lot of problems right from the days of shooting to the release of trailer and the song 'GHOOMAR'. Sets were burnt, costumes destroyed, animals injured, hardwork neglected. And now death threats to Bhansali and the lead actors. Is it even ethical? And why the Government is silent about these facts? Till when in India Art will suffer because of the religious insecurities? Is religion this weak that it is being effected by a mere film? The answer to these questions are known to all but spoken by a few.
Padmavati is a big budget film, a lot of money, time and effort has been put into it. Postponing it further and banning it in even one state will lead to a big loss for the film makers and for the whole industry as well. It's further postponement may also give the various chaos spreading people a chance to incite Hindu - Muslim communal riots.
All in all people need to understand that there is something known as creative liberty and it needs to be respected. In a country like India, everyone has the freedom of expression but only until it is in a peaceful way. Rajputs should understand that the film is an attempt to glorify them and their culture, and is made purely for entertainment purposes and not to hurt their sentiments in any way. The Central Board of Film Certification(CBFC) is there to look over the matter and take an action accordingly, i.e cut some scenes if it so required. No other institution or association should make a comment upon the same.
This film is an art in purest of its form, it 's the seed of Bhansali's magnificent artistry, and in my opinion, ought to be shown to the masses as a beautiful piece of entertainment.
